Web Content Management Investments Will Repel the Negative Economy
By Travis Cole, Chief Operating Officer
Forrester recently published a report that predicts web content management (WCM) investments will repel the negative economic environment by continuing to grow this year. Oshyn and other companies involved in bringing improved WCM capabilities to the market appreciate the findings of the new Forrester report and note these predictions also make great business sense. In tough times companies must find ways to become even more competitive and WCM capabilities deliver great results by creating more effective website interactions with customers.
Some of the key findings of the new report include:
- 72 percent of those who responded say they plan to increase their web content management investment this year and 19 percent of the remainder plan to keep the same investments level they made last year.
- "Personalization" will be a big push for companies improving their WCM capabilities with over 64 percent of those responding saying they plan to deploy "personalization" capabilities within the next 12 months. Another 61 percent said they will be focused on the introduction of "rich internet applications" and 55 percent included "audio and/or video."
- 64 percent of those who responded said they will purchase WCM products and services this year to improve customer experience with their websites. Another 25 percent of the responders said they will increase spending in WCM services to allow them to streamline their web publishing processes.
Oshyn has been helping companies find their way to success in implementing web content management capabilities for almost a decade now. Many companies underestimate the challenges involved and the pressure that can be put on internal organizations while seeking to deliver on the promises of WCM. One of the great values Oshyn delivers to our clients is the wealth of experience we have accumulated in the area of WCM implementations. We are well positioned to help our clients avoid the potential pitfalls that exist on the path to improved customer experience through WCM capabilities. Oshyn is excited companies continue to realize the value of these investments and we are equally excited we will be involved with many more client success stories in 2010.

Social Media and Mobile
When many people think about mobile marketing they think about applications for the iPhone and other devices. While mobile applications can be very exciting, some companies have a hard time figuring out what kind of application would add value for their customers or increase their customer base. Creating an app just for the sake of having one could deliver poorly on ROI.
Zara recently launched an iPhone app for visitors to look at the most recent collections – this application provides a great solution to the Zara customer who uses an iPhone because most of Zara’s website is built with Flash technology which doesn’t function well on iPhones. According to Adobe, Flash powers 75% of web video, 70% percent of web games, and many other apps and media.
But there’s another big opportunity in mobile: websites that recognize they are being contacted by a mobile device (even better…by which mobile device) and deliver content specifically rendered for a mobile device so that mobile visitors have a good User Experience, i.e. easy navigation, ecommerce abilities, easy to read content. Some Content Management Systems have this functionality built-in.
Lots of people use their mobile devices for social media networking. On Twitter, users often share URLs but often times they take too long to load and are difficult to navigate because of websites not being mobile-optimized. Businesses stand to lose visitors, potential leads and conversions via mobile if referred visitors encounter slow load time or difficult navigation.
