Oshyn builds a User Experience Design System for a major US city, enabling all major departments to deliver a consistent, high-quality, and accessible user experience for residents.
The Challenge
When a resident of a major US city needs to pay a parking ticket, apply for a permit, and check their benefits eligibility, they're not just visiting one website; they're navigating three completely different digital experiences. Each city department manages its own site, built on different technologies, with different designs, navigation patterns, and accessibility standards. What should feel like interacting with one unified city government instead feels like visiting different companies.
For one of the largest cities in America, serving millions of residents and processing billions of dollars in transactions annually, this fragmentation poses significant challenges. The city recognized that residents shouldn't have to relearn how to navigate city services every time they visit a different department's website.
They needed a design system or a unified set of components, patterns, and standards that could work across all agencies regardless of their underlying technology. This would ensure that every citizen receives a consistent, accessible, and high-quality experience, whether they're applying for business licenses, checking school closures, or paying fines.
But creating a design system that multiple agencies could adopt required a flexible, headless architecture that could integrate with the various technologies already in use across departments. The city needed Oshyn to build the infrastructure and launch the design system website that would serve as the foundation for this transformation.
The Solution
Oshyn was selected for its deep expertise in Adobe Experience Manager and its ongoing partnership with the city. Having previously delivered successful projects for multiple city departments, Oshyn understood the city's processes, governance requirements, and the technical complexities of coordinating across agencies.
Oshyn architected and deployed the AEM headless infrastructure to power the design system website. This headless approach allows the design system content to be consumed by any department regardless of their underlying technology stack. While the city's internal team handled HTML development and styling to ensure the design system reflected the city’s brand and accessibility standards, Oshyn focused on building the reliable, scalable foundation to deliver that content.
Once development was completed, Oshyn supported the launch through comprehensive regression testing and test case creation, ensuring the design system website performed reliably and could serve as a trusted resource for agencies across the city.
The Outcome
The design system website now serves as the foundation for consistent, accessible digital experiences across all city departments. Agencies can access reusable components, design patterns, and implementation guidelines that work seamlessly with their existing technology stacks, eliminating duplicated effort and ensuring every resident encounters the same high-quality experience, regardless of which department they visit.
